Changes to Dual Enrollment (by GSFC)

Please read carefully if you are a student or parent of a student interested in or already participating in dual enrollment.  Some of these changes affect already-enrolled dual credit students.

Newly-Updated Procedures for Dual Enrollment are as follows:

 1) Course selections are wide open for 11th and 12th graders. They can take anything listed in the approved course directory on the Georgia Student Finance Commission Website.

 2) 10th Graders will only be allowed to take what are listed as CTAE classes. There is a stipulation about allowing 'high achieving' 10th graders to be unrestricted in their dual enrollment class selection but 'high achieving' is based solely on a SAT or ACT score. So, any 10th grader who would like to participate in Dual Enrollment without a restriction on the classes they are allowed to take will need to take the SAT or ACT and score at least a 1200 on the SAT or a 26 on the ACT. At this time there is no Accuplacer score equivalent to allow 10th graders to use it to qualify as high achieving.

***This rule only applies to 10th graders as 11th and 12th graders are allowed to be admitted on lower SAT/ACT scores as well as the Accuplacer***

 3) No 9th Graders can participate

 4) There is a 30 hour cap on Dual Enrollment. Students will only be allowed to get 30 hours. Any Dual Enrollment student that has already reached 19 or more credit hours will be allowed and additional 12 hours of Dual Enrollment credit.

The way you become a Dual Enrollment participant are as follows:

a- Georgia Southwestern- You have to fill out an application (the app fee is waived for dual enrollment students) and have to have reach certain score levels on the SAT/ACT or GSW's version of the Accuplacer.

b-South Georgia Tech- Fill out an application and either have a certain score on the Accuplacer or have a HOPE GPA of 2.6 or higher to be admitted.

c.- Columbus State or Columbus Tech- I will work with these colleges on an as needed basis when requested by a student.

The Accuplacer- Each college has their own score limits that are told to the student at the time of testing and they receive immediate score feedback upon completion of the test. They can then register for classes if all other paperwork has been submitted, or they can schedule to retest if they didn't meet the cut score on any section. Both GSW and South Georgia Tech come onto our campus to administer the Accuplacer. This is a great option as it allows students to still be admitted before the time it would take to get SAT/ACT scores back.

A GSW-Administered Accuplacer will be scheduled for late March/early April. Upon taking that test and filling out an application, any student who will be a Junior (or senior) in the fall will be able to sign up for any courses they want listed in the approved courses directory that is not already marked 'full' at the college.

We currently have a 'Dual Enrollment Day' Scheduled for March 10. We will have an information session about the changes to Dual Enrollment at 10:30 in the cafeteria. Following the information session students can meet with the respective college advisers by appointment. Parents are welcome to attend.  The appointment sign up sheet is posted in the front office at MCHS.
