Special Week Honors Georgia’s School Boards

The Marion County School District is joining in a statewide celebration next week to salute the efforts of local school board members.  The week of March 14 - 18, 2022 has been proclaimed School Board Appreciation Week in Georgia.  The weeklong observance calls attention to the contributions of local boards of education.

The men and women serving our school district are:

Virginia Swint, Board Chair, serving since March 1994; Debra Graham serving since January 1999; Leon Williams, Board Vice-Chair, serving since January 2005; Jason Brown serving since January 2021; and Brandon Grier serving since January 2021

As constitutional officers of Georgia, the school board's primary responsibilities are: to set the vision and goals for the district; to adopt policies that give the district administration direction to set priorities and achieve its goals including areas such as student assignment and student discipline; and hire and evaluate the superintendent.  As community leaders, school board members serve as advocates for the children in local public schools and must study, evaluate and decide what actions are in the best interest of those students.

“Citizens elect board members to represent the community’s voice on education matters and to set the vision for the school district,” said Interim Superintendent Stuart Gibbo.  “Our board spends countless hours fulfilling its responsibilities and working together to continually improve our education system.”
