LK Moss Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15- October 15. LK Moss faculty and students have been busy this month learning about the many contributions of Hispanics in America, while celebrating the rich culture, clothing, and lifestyle of each home country. Mrs. Ball, library exploratory teacher, has been reading books from Hispanic authors and about Hispanic culture to her students. Students even had the opportunity to weave yarn on a loom after reading Rainbow Weaver by Linda Elovitz Marshall. Mrs. Goodroe, ESOL teacher, filmed students reading a book about Cesar Chavez in English and Spanish for students in grades PreK-12 to enjoy. Mrs. Truitt and Mrs. Lowthorpe, media specialist and media clerk, made a display in the Media Center of various items used in Hispanic countries and wall display of famous Hispanic figures for students to visit.  Mrs. Gipaya, art teacher, had students learning about Frida Kahlo, reading books about her and replicating her style of art onto beautiful bulletin boards. Students have also been creating paper weavings and Aztec sun weavings in the art room.  Students from Mrs. Jackson’s fifth grade homeroom presented information about Guatemala to the class and on video for the school to watch.  And most importantly, students in all grades have been showing off beautiful Cortes and other traditional clothing from their home countries. We are so proud of our culturally diverse population at LK Moss, and we encourage our students to continue their learning of Hispanic heritage throughout the year, every year!
