On Friday, November 7, Marion County High School hosted Apply to College Day for the 15th consecutive year. According to the Georgia Student Finance Commission, “the goal of Georgia Apply to College (GAC) is to provide all Georgia high school seniors with the opportunity to apply to college with a focus on providing assistance to first generation and underrepresented students as they navigate the college application process.” All Marion County Seniors were invited and scheduled to participate in the process, which included viewing and confirming the students’ Georgia Match pairings.

Marion County Seniors received application instructions in August and have already begun receiving acceptance letters to colleges. On Apply to College Day, Marion Seniors filled out 52 applications and were able to set up their FAFSA login information. Half of the Senior class elected to participate in this event. One third of the class is mostly off campus with work-based learning and enrollment in universities and technical colleges.

Assisting with the post-secondary process were:

·         Staff Sgt. DeOntre Austin, U.S. Army

·         Mr. Luke Ellis, Georgia Southwestern State University

·         Mr. Tylen Pepito, South Georgia Technical College

Melissa Jernigan is the high school counselor and event organizer for Apply to College Day. For more information regarding Apply to College Day or the Georgia Match initiative, visit www.gafutures.org.
