The Georgia Department of Education is recognizing 162 graduating seniors across Georgia as 2026 Georgia Scholars, State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced today.

Cash Jones of Marion County High School has been selected as a Georgia Scholar for the Class of 2026. Cash is the son of James and Melissa Gilliland. He is an outstanding student and talented musician and actor. Over the years, he has starred in numerous roles at the Springer Opera House (Georgia’s State Theatre), has traveled and performed with the Voices of the Valley Youth Chorus, and has been selected twice for a prestigious and exclusive summer program through the Juilliard School.

At MCHS, Cash is a Senior Superlative, an Honor Graduate, and a member of Scholars Academy. He plays tennis and is a member of the One Act Play cast that placed 3rd in Region this year. Cash has also been a State Champion in Literary Music-Boys’ Solo. He has completed community service requirements to earn a citizenship seal. He also earned the highest SAT score for the Class of 2026.

Cash is hardworking, enthusiastic, and extremely talented—a proverbial “Renaissance Man.” He has been accepted to several esteemed college performance programs and has elected to continue his education in Voice Performance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA).

Through the Georgia Scholar program, GaDOE identifies and honors high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. Each honoree receives a seal for their diploma along with a graduation cord to recognize their achievement.

"Congratulations to the 162 students recognized as Georgia Scholars this year," Superintendent Woods said. "These students exemplify excellence in academics, leadership, and service. I'm proud to celebrate their achievements and confident they will continue making a positive difference in their communities and beyond."

Georgia Scholars carry exemplary course loads throughout their four years of high school, demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, actively participate in school and community activities, and serve as leaders in extracurricular and service organizations.
